I visited O’Neills to try their Sunday carvery.
The great British Sunday carvery has been a staple in UK for generations. Serving a roast dinner like this originated in the 1950s in England. Usually found in pubs across the UK, you can now enjoy an authentic carvery in the Algarve, every Sunday from 2pm until 5pm!
But what exactly is a carvery and why do we love piling our plates with juicy meats, crispy roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables?
Choose your plate, your way
The name “carvery” simply comes from the act of carving the meat. Carveries are down to you to decide what’s on your plate. Your choice of meats, vegetables and all the trimmings.
Depending on the location, the time of year, or the chef’s preference, the selection of meats can vary. You’ll often have the choice between classics like beef, pork, gammon or turkey. Other options might include lamb, chicken or even seafood.
My experience at O’Neill’s
At O’Neills, customers choose from selection of meats. During my visit, it was turkey, pork and medium or well-done beef. The meat is sliced to your order by chef directly in front of you, and then you continue through to fill your plate with all the trimmings you want!
Seasonal vegetables included Brussel sprouts, carrots, peas, sausages, baked or roasted potatoes and much more. You can then finish your plate with your preferred sauces, anything from garlic mayo to classic gravy, a rich sauce made from the thickened juices of cooked meat.
For dessert, sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble are available.
Once you’ve got a full plate, simply return to your table and enjoy the plate you’ve just put together. I especially loved their Yorkshire pudding, crispy and puffy and soft inside, as well as the cauliflower cheese and the meat, obviously!
