Sandra’s childhood memories and passion for hospitality transformed into a lifelong project. Driven by the desire to preserve the village’s authenticity and offer a genuine experience, Sandra and her partner restored traditional houses, respecting traditional Alentejo architecture, and integrating comfort and modern amenities.

Behind the project

Casas do Moinho is located between the Alentejo and Algarve region, on a hill in Odeceixe village, next to the windmill. There is a unique and touching story behind this hotel. Sandra Barbedo and Arnaldo Couto were living in Porto, but in search for a slower pace of life, they decided to move to Odeceixe. Sandra had always held a special place in her heart for this village. As a child she spent time here at her father’s house and this influenced the couple’s decision to relocate from Porto.

Their vision was to create an authentic project where people could discover the local culture and natural beauty of the region. Their project started with only one house that Sandra inherited. This house, purchased years ago by her father, carried deep emotional value for her.

Sandra and Arnaldo renovated the first house to host guests, marking the start of the tourism project. Once they saw their project is successful and there was interest from travellers who seek an authentic village stay, they decided to buy additional old village houses, some of which were almost ruins. They managed to restore them and keep the traditional style. Each house was carefully rebuilt using traditional building techniques and local materials, preserving authenticity, with nothing but the best materials. Interiors were designed to combine comfort and a feeling of peacefulness and well-being. The units are equipped with heated floors, a well furbished kitchenette, dining area, private patios and daily housekeeping.

Restoring tradition, adding comfort

With a strong investment in quality tourism and a concept of creating a true symbiosis between the two regions, the Alentejo and the Algarve, they now manage eleven houses and six rooms.

The contemporary Altinho B&B unit consists of 6 rooms with individual access and private bathrooms, ideal for one or two people for short stays who wish to experience village life and get to know the region. Three holiday homes are studios with terraces. At certain times of the year, is possible to enjoy these houses for longer stays, in a holiday home concept. The eight houses are typical old village houses traditional on the outside but offering modern interior comfort in a contemporary style.

There are two restaurants, Näperõn run by chef Hugo Nascimento, which offers contemporary Portuguese kitchen and is featured in the Michelin guide, and restaurant Assador Altinho, which offers Brazilian tapas.

The units are spread across four centres within the village, separated by no more than 200 metres, designed to offer the experience of living in an ancient village in the region. This layout gives a real Casas do Moinho experience, the feeling of real traditional village. Local architecture has been preserved, creating a network of houses. Guests can experience local life, with authentic neighbours living nearby. This integration with the community invites visitors to become part of the village’s daily life, offering a rare real experience of genuine connections and authenticity.

Shared spaces such as the pool area, courtyards, terraces, and small common areas encourage a sense of community. Casas do Moinho became recognised as a pioneer in village tourism in the Algarve.

My experience

I stayed in one of the houses, Casa dos Mastros, which is perfect for a holiday stay. It has a fully equipped kitchen, coffee machine with capsules, a double bed, a mezzanine with two single beds and a patio with pool views.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Joana, who explained the hotel’s concept to us and guided us to our house. The house was spacious with a beautiful patio offering stunning nature views from its hilltop location. We spent the afternoon by the infinity pool overlooking the windmill, followed by a stroll through the lively village, with cafes and restaurants filled with people. In the evening, we enjoyed a fabulous dinner “7 “momentos” in Näperõn.

The next morning, traditional breakfast was served and afterwards we visited the windmill and then drove to Odeceixe beach, located about 3km from the hotel. This beach is considered to be one of the best on the coast, but whether you head north, south or east, you will find a plenty of interesting places, to make your trip absolutely unforgettable.
